This course enables students to develop basic skills through the beginning stages of construction. Students learn techniques such as Survey, Excavation, Foundations, Drainage, Radon, Joists/Decking, Framing, Trusses, Roofing, Siding, Insulation, Drywall, Hanging Doors, Painting, Trades, Flooring, Trim/Molding.
The course emphasizes the importance of work ethics, communication skills, problem solving, leadership, and teamwork.
Program Topics Include:
- SAFETY - CPR/First Aid and 10 Hour OSHA Certification
- OSHA 30 Certification - 2nd year
- Construction Math: Tape Measure Reading, Types of Measurements, Fractions, Formulas for Construction Trades, Arc's, Tangents, Field Plotting, Excavation, Framing, Electrical, etc.
- Surveying using GPS and Lidar software
- Reading and understanding Architectural, Engineering and Construction drawings
- Create Technical Documents and Permit drawings by using hard drafting, Sketchup, AutoCad and Revit
- Use Bluebeam, a planning software and SmartSheet (a construction management scheduling program)
- Learn the basics of BIM software (Building Information Modeling)
- Plumbing Basics: Copper vs Pex, ABS vs PVC, Supply vs Drain, Cast vs Plastic
- Electrical Basics: Conduit Installation, Wire Installation, Conduit vs Romex, Termination of Circuits
- Carpentry Basics: Framing, Foundations, Finish, Stairs, Steel vs Wood, Installation of doors and windows and using Mechanical Fasteners
- Installing Drywall and learning Painting techniques
- Rigging, Scaffolding and Ladder safety
- Space Construction / R&D

- Hand and Power Tools: Identification, Types of Hand Tools, Types of Power Tools, Repair and Maintenance, Preventative Maintenance for Tools, Equipment, etc.
